Ayodhya Comm's 'informal' report by Dec: Patil
- New Delhi: Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil on Friday told the Lok Sabha the government was expecting to receive an ''informal'' report of the Justice Liberhan Commission inquiring into the demolition of Babri Masjid, by December 31.
Responding to a question from RJD member Devendra Prasad Yadav, Patil said the government did not want to do ''anything in haste'' that could hamper the submission of the report. Patil's announcement, however, was received with protests from several MPs who alleged that it showed that the government was giving the Commission, appointed nearly 14 years ago, one more extension.
The Commission has already received unprecedented 39 extensions, the members said adding the Commission would function even beyond December 31.
Patil said there were ''some problems'' as some witnesses did not want to appear before the Commission and had moved courts to seek exemption from appearance. Also, some other issues led to the delay in the functioning of the Commission, he added.
As many as 100 people, including several former ministers, RSS and VHP leaders, and senior bureuacrats, have deposed before the Commission which has been given affidavits running into several thousands of pages.
