My interest in engines
Jimmy O'Malley and I laughed loudly as we sat in the playgorund of our school in Ireland. I was thirteen years old and Jimmy was fourteen and we had been friends since I arrived here two years ago. He was my best friend.
When all the other school children had made me feel different and alone, he had been there for me. I thought greatly of him and hoped that we would be friends forever. Actually I knew we'd be friends forever!
Suddenly a loud noise sounded outside the school, almost like a great roaring sound. We rushed to the fence to see what had made this strange noise.
Then I saw it. It looked to me like a metal moster. It was an automobile! I had heard of these things in the newspapers but never thought I would actually see one. They had been described as carts that moved with no horses. It was a scary sight. Metal pipes and levers stuck all ove rthe place and smoke rose from a tube at the top.
"I don't like it," I said to Jimmy, "all this modern technology... its not for me!"
Jimmy however lvoed the idea of the automobile and decided there and thento ruch off home and tell his father that he had seen one! He climbed over the fence and rushed off down the road. However as I watched him leave I saw something terrible happen. The old bridge a the end of the road was begining to crumble!
It was being knocked down to be rebuilt stornger, but Jimmy had not known this and the enitre thing was about to crumble down ontop of him!
I had to do something!
I jumped over the fence and tried to run after him but he was faster then I was and I knew I would never catch him up. I turned to the man who owned the automobile. His name was Gerald Heathcliff, a local rich man.
"Mr Heathcliff," I shouted, "my friend is in trouble! Will this automobile of yours be fast enough to catch him up?"
"Of course it will young lady!" he said, "hope in and we'll go and save your friend!"
I was nervous to enter the metal thing but close dmy eyes, took a deap breath and climbed in anyway.
Mr Heathcliff starte the engine and the automobile began to ruch off down the street noisily.
Within seconds we had caguht up with Jimmy, but we were under the bridge which was falling!
I grabbed Jimmy and dragged him inside when suddenly the bricks began to fall.
Mr Heathcliff was able to dodge and weave the automobile away from the falling bricks and clear the area just in time, as the large bridge fell to the ground with a CRASH!
Jimmy wa sin shock. I had saved his life.
I was in shock. This machine had been remarkable! Instantly I fell in love with all this mechanical and was determiend to become an engineer so I could learn how to make and operate such magnificant things!
