Unless we're writing into the backstory that Earth is already toast from Armageddon and we've all regressed back to the Stone Age (or the '60s) then predominantly I'd think weapons should be beam-type phaserish sorts of things. Maybe not completely Trekker, but along those lines. I would likely vote against iron swords and tungsten polearms...way too anachronistic for a future setting. Like the 'shielding' I suggested in the armor topic, perhaps weapons that vary in strength based on the quality of your equipment (or your skills in building one, or both).

Since we're not combat-focused, I think we have more leeway in these things, provided we have sufficient non-combat content to occupy time. One thing that sort of irritates me about RPGs and MMOs in general is when it takes 87 shots with a gun to kill a squirrel, or something like that. It's just way too off-balance. Even a blindfolded drunk would kill the squirrel before that.
