If you have not read or seen Yami no Matsuei, you're missing out.
It has many 'deep' characters (and lots of bishies and random chicks) who get you sucked into the story.
It's sort of a mix between Japanese mythology, a detective book, and a crime show.
Here's a summary (since I'm too lazy to write one up myself) of the storyline:

Here are descriptions of each character:

The most powerful Shinigami, Tsuzuki is able to control several Shikigami (spiritual deities that often appear in animal form). Known for his sweet tooth and carefree nature, he hides a dark past riddled with many secrets.

The newest Shinigami and the latest to partner with Tsuzuki. He died at a very young age under mysterious circumstances. Because of his traumatic childhood and his empathic abilities, he is not very social and finds it hard to trust others.

Tatsumi is the tall, imposing secretary/treasurer who's always got money on his mind. Once partnered with Tsuzuki, Tatsumi rarely sees any more action as a Shinigami. His special power is his ability to manipulate shadows.

Watari is known as an eccentric scientist, inventor and sometimes-even doctor. Always with his owl 003, the carefree Watari's special ability lies in giving his child-like drawings life.

The man with the obsession over life and death. A doctor originally intent on saving lives, Muraki now kills with the intent to lure Tsuzuki for reasons unknown.

The twin librarians of the undead world. They aid the Shinigami in their cases with various information found in the library or in their vast computer database.

I'm actually cosplaying as the human form of Byakko (one of Tsuzuki's shiki) at AMA this year. :3
Last year I was Tsuzuki. x3
