AHS picks new head coach

Ada — The search for a new head football coach ended Tuesday with the merging of two prep powers. Matt Weber, youngest son of the coaching family at 2A power Davis, will assume the reins at Ada.

Weber, 34, graduated from Davis in 1991, winning a state championship as a player in 1990 under his father, legendary Wolves coach Joe Weber. He was chosen from among more than 40 applicants and succeeds Steve Dean, who coached Ada to a 31-16 record over the past four seasons.

“It’s been a real pleasure, and I think a tribute to our school system, to draw the number of quality applicants we’ve had for our football position,” Ada Superintendent Pat Harrison said in announcing Weber’s hiring. “Coach Weber is a perfect example of these individuals. We’ve been so impressed by him since the very beginning. He’s been successful wherever he’s been, but even more important, he’s a quality coach and teacher that we feel has a bright future leading our program.

“I think he’s a great fit for us, but I also feel we’re a good fit for him and his family as well,” Harrison added. “I really look forward to him getting on board and starting his work as the next head coach of the Cougars.”

Since Weber took over the Marlow program in 2004, the Outlaws have found state-level success, with a Class 3A runner-up finish in 2006. Marlow was 7-4 last fall, losing a first-round playoff game to eventual state runner-up Kingfisher.

Perhaps the brightest stars on Weber’s resumé are three state titles (1999-2001) as an assistant coach at Carl Albert under Gary Rose. During his stay at the school from 1999-2004, he was also an assistant track coach on teams that won a state title in 2002 and placed runner-up in 2001.

At Marlow, Weber was 2006 District Coach of the Year, two-time Area Coach of the Year, and Lawton Constitution Coach of the Year. He also spent two years at Harrah (1997-99) as a football assistant and head track coach, winning a regional track championship.

At Davis, Weber was All-state in both football and track, he was the salutatorian of his graduating class, and he received nominations to the Air Force and Naval Academies. He attended and played football at Air Force Academy Prep School in Colorado Springs during the 1991-92 school year.

Weber also won a championship at the collegiate level in 1994 at Northeastern State, where he attended college from 1992-95. He wound up his college years at East Central (1995-97), graduating with a B.S. in biology and being named Biology Student of the Year.

The Weber dynasty at Davis has accounted for two of the school’s four state titles (under Joe Weber 1990 and 1995) and numerous other semifinal and finals appearances. Matt Weber’s brother, Jody, took over the program after Joe Weber retired following the 2000 season and has taken Davis to the state finals three times in the past seven seasons.

Weber will replace Steve Dean, who was stripped of his coaching duties in a controversial decision by the Ada Board of Education in January. Harrison will officially recommend Weber to the school board at next month’s meeting.

Dont know who Anti Coug is, but if it is Neely that is the name I heard.

GBS and I were at the Aldridge the other morning and a School Board member wanted to know if the new football coach had been in yet. I hope they explained that he is expected to frequent the Aldridge when they hired him.

Why would Neely come back to Byng? I thought the whole reason he left last year is because he got a quarter of a million dollars to go down to Madill or something that is what everyone told me and if he is leaving can I apply for his current job.

Maybe they want to Byng guys back to back.
